You Want to Backpack. But Figuring It All Out Can Feel Overwhelming.

Maybe you’re excited about backpacking, but the more you learn, the more questions seem to appear.

How do I know what gear I really need?
How do I plan a safe trip?
What if I get lost or something goes wrong?
What about wildlife, weather, water, or being alone?
How do I know when to keep going—or when to turn around?

How do I know I’m ready?

There’s So Much to Learn

Gear, planning, permits, food, water, navigation, safety—the list can feel endless when you don’t know what matters most.

Safety Concerns Create Second-Guessing

Wildlife, weather, getting lost, injuries, personal safety, and all the “what ifs” can make it difficult to trust your own decisions.

You Don’t Want to Depend on Someone Else

You may have backpacked with others before, but you want to understand the decisions being made—not simply follow someone who knows more than you do.

You don’t eliminate fear by promising safety. You reduce fear by increasing knowledge and capability.

You don’t need to know everything before you begin. But you do need a way to understand what matters, build your skills, and learn how to make informed decisions for yourself.

That’s why I created Becoming a BackpackHER.

Becoming a BackpackHER Gives You a Clear Path Forward

You don’t need more random tips. You need a way to understand what matters, why it matters, and how to apply it to your own adventures.

Becoming a BackpackHER is a 6-week program designed to help you build practical backpacking knowledge, develop real outdoor skills, and learn how to make informed decisions for yourself.

You’ll learn how to plan, prepare, respond when things don’t go according to plan, navigate with greater confidence, and build the evidence you need to trust your own judgment.

The goal isn’t to make you dependent on a guide. The goal is to help you become more capable on your own.

What You’ll Build Along the Way

Plan With Confidence
Learn how to research a trip, understand permits, evaluate terrain and conditions, and prepare intentionally.

Choose Gear for the Adventure
Understand how to select and use gear based on where you’re going—not simply follow someone else’s packing list.

Build Trail-Safety Skills
Learn how to think through first aid, nutrition, wildlife, water crossings, changing conditions, and the unexpected.

Navigate With Greater Confidence
Develop foundational map-and-compass skills and learn to use the terrain around you as evidence.

Make Informed Decisions
Practice assessing what’s happening, problem-solving, and deciding when to continue, adjust, or turn around.

Build Self-Reliance
Bring everything together so you can increasingly trust your own knowledge and judgment on the trail.

YES, I want to join the BackpackHER Class!

Hello, I'm Pamela

’m an outdoor educator, guide, author, and lifelong adventurer with more than 25 years of experience helping people build outdoor skills.

I know how overwhelming backpacking can feel when you’re trying to figure everything out on your own. That’s why I created Becoming a BackpackHER — to give women a clear place to begin, experienced guidance along the way, and the knowledge to make informed decisions for themselves.

Over the years, I’ve taught backpacking, navigation, wilderness survival, first aid, mountain biking, and kayaking. I’ve spent years backpacking and mountaineering, completed multiple solo journeys on the John Muir Trail, and served 10 years with the National Ski Patrol.

But this program isn’t about what I’ve done.

It’s about what you’re becoming.

My job is not to make you dependent on me as your guide. It’s to help you understand the why, build your skills, practice making decisions, and develop the confidence to trust your own judgment.

What Changes When You Build the Skills to Trust Yourself?

Without the knowledge and practice you need:
You may keep second-guessing your decisions, relying on someone else to lead, putting off trips you want to take, or wondering whether you’re really ready.

With greater knowledge, capability, and experience:
You can plan more intentionally, respond more calmly when things change, make informed decisions, and step onto the trail with greater confidence in your own judgment.

You’re Not Just Learning to Backpack.

You’re Becoming a BackpackHER.

A woman who knows how to prepare, problem-solve, navigate, and trust herself because she’s built the evidence to do so.

Yes, I am ready to begin my backpacking journey!
